How to avoid pre-nups becoming a wedding alarm bell
As one of the most popular seasons for wedding proposals approaches, couples are being reminded...
Luxury lifestyle site Muddy Stilettos asked its readers to vote for the best local village, town or city to call home in 2024 using its Top 260 Places to Live guide. In a regional vote across 29 counties, Saffron Walden topped the poll of 10 potential candidates in Essex.

From towns to villages, hamlets to commuter favourites, the 260 locations were independently researched and picked by the in-the-know Muddy Editorial team, and then over 27,500 readers went on to vote. The results revealed a passion for each location's sense of community, access to schools, restaurants, shops and culture, plus their feeling towards their overall immediate surroundings.
In Essex, the market town Saffron Walden won the top spot with its cosy pubs, independent award-winners and country walks. Top-notch restaurants, bars, and with Saffron Hall and English Heritage Site, Audley End House and Gardens, on its doorstep, only added to its appeal.
With a clutch of amazing schools, including Clavering Primary and Ofsted Outstanding Saffron Walden County High, Saffron Walden is a great location for families. The average house price is just £450,260 (over the past year) – well worth it considering all the town has to offer!
Voting took place between 30 July–15 August 2024, with readers given one vote each. The Best Place to Live lists provided information on everything from eating out and the best schools to the commute as well as local arts and culture, but the final decision came from the readers' own personal experience. The Top 10 most popular towns and villages in Essex for 2024 are:
